Profs and Pints expands to Rockville to stage scholarly talks at True Respite Brewing Company
Profs and Pints, an innovative social enterprise devoted to democratizing access to higher learning and providing scholars with new audiences, is expanding to Rockville to stage talks at True Respite Brewing Company. It plans to use this location to bring area residents and, especially, Montgomery College students easier access to outstanding lectures by professors from colleges and universities in Washington D.C. and elsewhere in the region.
Profs and Pints’ debut True Respite event will be a May 23rd talk by Justin Jacobs, an American University historian of archaeology who has delivered several excellent Profs and Pints lectures and is a frequent speaker for Smithsonian Associates. He’ll be speaking about prehistoric cave paintings and how they offer evidence of tremendous leaps in communication and human progress, and he’ll be displaying images from remarkable sites where such paintings have been found. (Details and tickets for his talk are available at https://profsandpints.
“Many residents of Rockville and surrounding communities already are part of the large following Profs and Pints has earned in staging hundreds of talks in venues in Washington D.C.,” says Peter Schmidt, the company’s founder. “By establishing a presence at True Respite Brewing in Rockville I hope to make it easier for them and others in the area to attend Profs and Pints talks and learn from star faculty members at some of our nation’s best higher-education institutions.”
“I especially look forward to seeing Montgomery College students at my talks,” Schmidt says. “It’s a short trip from the Rockville campus to True Respite Brewing, and by making it they’ll be able to enjoy lectures by faculty members at outstanding private universities such as American, Catholic, Georgetown, George Washington, Howard, and Johns Hopkins, as well as great public institutions such as the University of Maryland, the University of Virginia, and the U.S. Naval Academy. They’ll benefit from the teaching of professors at elite institutions for the price of an inexpensive ticket and whatever they want to order at True Respite—about the same cost as going to the movies.”
Bailey O’Leary, co-founder of True Respite, says, “Our purpose and mission at ‘True Respite’ is to encourage people to follow their passions and do the things they love. Take the time to do things that bring you joy. Learning and education falls squarely into that, and we are so excited to welcome Profs and Pints to our brewery! We love how they make higher education learning accessible to the general public.”
Since being founded by Schmidt, a veteran education journalist, in Washington D.C. in October 2017, Profs and Pints has staged more than 450 venue-based talks and more than 200 Webinars and has sold more than 45,000 tickets. It currently stages talks in three Washington venues and in Annapolis, Charlottesville, Nashville, Newport News, Richmond, and online. It is working to revive talks in several cities, including Chicago and Philadelphia, where its operations were sidetracked by the pandemic.
Inspired partly by the academies and symposia of ancient Greece, Profs and Pints seeks to provide the general public with affordable access to higher learning by using the high-volume sale of inexpensive tickets to cover the cost of staging scholarly talks staged in bars, restaurants, hotels, nonprofit theaters, and other venues. Its speakers come from the full gamut of academic fields, including art, astronomy, economics, history, law, medicine, philosophy, political science, psychology, and religious studies.
