About Us

The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Montgomery County (NAMI MC) was founded in 1978 by five families who were challenged in finding support for their loved ones experiencing mental illness. At a time when information was scarce, treatment approaches were often harsh, and support services were limited, these families united to support one another, raise awareness about mental illness, and navigate the challenges of mental illness in their loved ones.

Over 45 years later, NAMI MC’s volunteer-led programs continue to deliver support and education with unmatched credibility and empathy. Caregivers of someone living with mental illness and individuals living with mental illness can participate in support groups and classes led by trained volunteers with lived experience – those who either live with a mental illness or care for someone living with a mental illness.

All NAMI MC programs are provided at no cost to participants, with a vision that one day, all people affected by mental illness will live healthy, fulfilling lives supported by a community that cares. We will achieve our vision by building communities of peers to provide support, education, and advocacy for everyone affected by mental illness.

NAMI MC is an independent local affiliate that benefits from a robust national network while specifically serving Montgomery County, MD. We are a non-government, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that relies on private and public funding.
